Mussoorie Tourism History

The history of Mussoorie tourism dates back to the 19th century when it was discovered as a summer retreat by the British during their colonial rule in India. Mussoorie’s cool climate, picturesque landscapes, and proximity to the plains made it a favored destination for the British officials and their families to escape the scorching heat of the Indian summers. In 1820, Captain Frederick Young, an officer of the British East India Company, is credited with the discovery of Mussoorie. He explored the area and recognized its potential as a hill station. The British started developing Mussoorie as a hill station by constructing roads, houses, and other infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of visitors.
